According to the police, the teachers arrived at their accommodation in the nearby Heuberg area with the young people (aged between 12 and 14) from the German city of Ludwigshafen in the afternoon. Because the weather was nice at the time, the teachers immediately decided to take the young people for a walk through Kleinwalsertal, a popular hiking area.
The group followed a route that a teacher had found on the Internet. It went over the Heuberggrat, a path that was advertised as a good hiking trail. In reality, the route included several climbing passages that require some experience.

The rain made the path slippery and due to the lack of good shoes the group decided to turn back. Two students slipped and suffered minor injuries. When panic arose among the students, the teachers decided to call the emergency services. Fortunately, two helicopters were available to take the students to safety. These were flown off the mountain in groups of three. “You can calculate how often you had to fly,” a spokesman for the rescue service told German media.

On their return, a crisis team was present to receive the exhausted and hypothermic students.
