German submarine warship found after a century of sinking

Jakarta

A team of ship hunters found a special object on the east coast of the United States – the wreck of a legendary warship German, Submarine.

According to a National Geographic report, the ship was the SM U-111, a submarine used by the German Imperial Navy during World War I. So how did it get to the United States?

After Germany accepted an armistice in 1918, the U-boats were handed over to the British. Then, the British gave some of the U-boats to the United States for a technical study.

Well, in 1922, the United States Navy deliberately sank the ship in an unknown location. In July, researcher Erik Petkovic and his colleagues managed to find the ship using an autonomous submarine at a depth of 120 meters in the ocean near Virginia.

The SM U-111 was one of five U-boats sunk in United States waters. There are also eight other WWII U-boat units that have suffered the same fate.

The SM U-111 itself was built in 1916 in the Kiel region of Germany and began to be deployed on the battlefield in early 1918. This ship is quite ferocious and has sunk several commercial ships in British and Irish waters.

“This first U-boat is sometimes underestimated. But it’s important to admit it in comparison Submarine deployed in World War II, these U-boats sank twice as many ships and 20% fewer were sunk, “said Innes McCartney, an archaeologist at Bangor University.
