German Soldiers on Standby in Cyprus Amidst Growing Israel-Hamas Conflict: Updates and Analysis

Most of the deployed German soldiers are on standby in Cyprus, an anonymous source in the security establishment in Berlin told the DPA news agency. Soldiers from Cyprus are ready to go immediately to perform tasks.

The Bundeswehr stated that it is currently impossible to predict how the conflict will develop.

There are fears that the war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist militant group that rules the Gaza Strip, which has been going on for three weeks, could expand, for example, with the involvement of Lebanon and Iran.

Last weekend, the German Ministry of Defense announced that it would increase its response capabilities in the region. The deployment was made to increase the army’s command capabilities, as well as control and planning capabilities, should an evacuation be necessary.

Combat swimmers from the KSM, an elite special unit of the German Navy, were already deployed in Cyprus, while army special units from the KSK are stationed in Jordan.
