The root system of a particular tree absorbed 5 to 17 percent of microparticles in five months.
German scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Fisheries have discovered a way to clean the soil of microplastics using birch trees. This is mentioned on website institutions.
It is noted that the experts conducted an experiment in which they moistened microplastic particles with a size of 5 to 50 micrometers with a fluorescent dye. Then they were added to containers with soil and birch seedlings were placed there.
The study lasted five months. During this time, the plant grew and showed that its root system absorbed from 5 to 17 percent of the microparticles.
“This initial study has proven that birch trees have the potential to clean up the planet. Perhaps with their help we can improve the quality of soil and water,” said the author of the experiment, Kat Austin.
Recall that earlier American doctors found that there is 13 times more plastic in a baby’s bodythan in adults.
