German regulator launches investigation into Amazon for alleged antitrust breaches

The German Competition Authority announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into internet competition giant Amazon over alleged antitrust infringements.

The service states that it examines whether Amazon has an almost indisputable position of economic power and whether it operates in different markets.

If this is the case, then the company will be given a special role and the regulator can take timely action against Amazon and prevent possible anti-competitive behavior.

In January, the German government approved changes to competition law, giving the Competition Authority more power to deal with large technology companies in a more timely and effective manner than simply imposing penalties on them for abusing a dominant market position.

There are already two ongoing investigations into Amazon’s abuse of market position in Germany.
