Magdeburg (dpa / sa) – The blood donation service of the German Red Cross (DRK) in Saxony-Anhalt is concerned about the increasing decline in corona measures. “Now the relaxation is coming and people will want to catch up on a lot and not have blood donations in mind first – and we are already noticing that,” said the head of the DRK blood donation service for Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, Nico Feldmann, of the German press -Agency. “We look ahead with concern, because the track we always struggle with is summer – and it’s still ahead of us.”
A significant decrease in donations could already be felt in May. Instead of the usual 8,000 donations per month for Saxony-Anhalt, so far (as of Wednesday evening) just 6500 blood donations have been collected. The deficit of around seven percent fewer donors could no longer be made up by the end of the month, said Feldmann.
Although there is no acute shortage of blood reserves, the demand remains high. The DRK therefore urgently called for blood donations. “Corona or not: The cancer care must run, the emergency care too – the blood is always needed,” said Feldmann.
Despite the recent lockdown, so far this year many donors have come to the appointments – very different from the first lockdown last spring. According to Feldmann, the biggest problem for the DRK is that since the beginning of the Corona crisis there have been no fixed donation dates in companies, vocational colleges, schools or institutions for the elderly. Since the beginning of the pandemic, popular donation locations such as schools, old people’s facilities or daycare centers have also collapsed.
“Many people are also a bit unsure whether they can donate after the vaccination,” said Feldmann. For this he gave the all-clear. After vaccination with an approved Sars-CoV-2 vaccine, blood can be donated on the day after the vaccination if you feel well.
