German Rail Strike 2023: Deutsche Bahn Emergency Timetable and Impact on Train Services

Nov 14, 2023 at 8:49 PM Update: an hour ago

Rail carrier Deutsche Bahn (DB) will introduce an emergency timetable due to the strike declared in Germany from 10 p.m. on Wednesday evening to 6 p.m. on Thursday. According to DB, far fewer trains will run on longer distances.

The train operator says that national delays and cancellations of many train journeys must be taken into account. Longer trains are used to transport as many passengers as possible, especially on busy routes between major German cities.

Regional train services are also being cut. This will differ per region, says DB. Travelers are urged to postpone as many trips as possible.

Trade union GDL, which declared the strike, is involved in a conflict with DB over higher wages and shorter working weeks. The union mainly represents train drivers, but also other railway employees. The union has been negotiating a new employment contract since last week. With the strike, GDL wants to increase the pressure on DB to agree to the demands.

In recent years, there have been more major strikes on the German railways. As a result, international trains from the Netherlands were also affected, as was freight transport. The German rail network is a very important hub for trains in Europe.
