(Berlin) – Björn Böhning: “The deletion of the entertainment mandate would be a nail in the coffin for the public-law system” / specialist congress debates the media state treaty
The Alliance of German Producers – Film & Fernsehen eV is pleased to have organized the German Producers’ Day physically again today. With around 350 invited guests, this year’s traditional specialist congress in the Kino International made the media state treaty its focus topic.
After an official handover of the baton and words of welcome to the industry, the new managing director of the producer alliance Björn Böhning opened the podium with the title “Medienstaatsvertrag – Amendment und Outlook” and emphasized his claim: “Entertainment is and must remain an elementary part of public broadcasting. Without Public broadcasting can’t take care of its mission of culture, education, advice and information. Not without reason it is a full and not a special program. The deletion of the entertainment mandate would be a nail in the coffin for the public broadcasting system. This system is Part of our democratic media order.”
Nanni Erben, Managing Director of MadeFor Film GmbH, sees entertainment programs as the foundation of the public service system. “Entertainment programs such as Tatort create a framework for socially relevant topics such as role models, diversity or abuse – a mirror of our society. Entertainment can therefore not be considered separately from information, education, culture and advice.”
Heike Raab, representative of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate at the federal level and for Europe and the media: “If we really want to reach the breadth of society, then the mission of culture, education, advice and information must inevitably also be entertaining.”
Oliver Schenk, Minister of State for Federal Affairs and Media and Head of the Saxon State Chancellery: “It’s not about abolishing entertainment. Public broadcasting should continue to inform, educate, convey cultural aspects and advise. Of course, entertainment is also part of it. But it just has to correspond to a public service profile.”
Patricia Schlesinger, ARD chairwoman and director of rbb Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg: “I am pleased that after 6 years we seem to be on target. One thing is clear: public broadcasting is the backbone of our democracy. Especially in the current one Time shows how important public broadcasting is. All the more we have to set it up in such a way that it is not only stable for our generation, but also for the future. For this we need a contemporary mandate and, above all, broad acceptance. Entertainment also creates acceptance.”
The panel was moderated by Helmut Hartung, editor-in-chief of medienpolitik.net.
The Producers Alliance was particularly pleased about the presence of the Minister of State for Culture, Claudia Roth MdB, who in her welcoming address found words of praise for the quick and flexible commitment of the Producers Alliance in relation to the Ukraine war. With the platforms and networks new start.media and aktorky-ta-aktory.org, the producer alliance makes an important contribution to enabling colleagues who have fled Ukraine to integrate quickly into the German labor market.
