According to the German statistical office, during 2023 the population of Germany grew by 300 thousand, to a record 84.7 million people, compensated by migration to the country for the low birth rate and an aging population.

Details: The growth was in line with the averages observed between 2012 and 2021. But this number was significantly lower than in 2022, when hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees arrived in Germany seeking asylum.
The statistics office estimates net migration to Germany at between 680 thousand and 710 thousand people in 2023.
This is down from 2015, when the war in the Middle East pushed the figure to 1.14 million. In 2022, against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian war, this figure reached 1.46 million.
As in all years since German reunification, the balance of births and deaths in 2023 was negative, as more people died than were born. The difference between the birth rate and death rate is at least 320 thousand.
Migration is a key topic in Germany, where the government has tightened border controls and vowed to speed up deportations and address the need for foreign workers with reforms to make it easier to access citizenship.
The far-right Alternative for Germany party has risen to second place in opinion polls, making migration a key issue for voters.
