The German police are using helicopters in Berlin to search for a stray lioness. The residents of the suburbs of Kleinmachnow, Stahnsdorf and Teltow are being urged to stay indoors via social media and loudspeaker trucks.
The animal is said to have been sighted along a road in Kleinmachnow in the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
The police began the search after eyewitnesses saw the lioness attacking a wild boar near midnight.
A video of an animal that resembles a lioness, made by a motorist, is circulating on social media. The police say no Bild that there is no doubt that it is a lioness.
No trace of the animal has yet been found. Five hunters search the search area with stun guns and veterinarians are also present. The police want to catch the predator in an “animal-friendly way”.
Residents should not only stay at home themselves, but also keep their pets indoors as much as possible. Daycare centers are open as usual on Thursdays.
It is still unclear where the animal came from. German media previously speculated that the lioness could have escaped from a circus, but the police are keeping all possibilities open. Agents check all zoos, circuses and animal shelters, but so far no lion is missing.
