German police have recovered much of the jewelry stolen in 2019 during a museum robbery in Dresden. The thieves then stole more than €113 million worth of jewelry, along with more than 4,300 diamonds and other precious stones. According to the police and judiciary, 31 objects were seized in Berlin on Friday evening.
Among other things, a breast star of the Polish Order of the White Eagle and a diamond hat decoration were recovered.
On November 25, 2019, thieves broke in by breaking a window of the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault), the museum treasury in Dresden’s Residenzschloss castle. They destroyed a display case with an ax and stole 17th and 18th century treasures.
The German newspaper Image writes that six men are on trial for the robbery. According to the newspaper, they come from a well-known Arab family from Berlin. The return of the diamonds followed, according to the news agency Reuters after negotiations between prosecutors and lawyers for the six men.
The recovered jewels are now under investigation. This is done to verify its authenticity and quality. Not all stolen goods have been recovered. Among other things, a shoulder pad (traditional shoulder decoration) with the so-called Dresden white diamond is still missing.
The creation of the Grünes Gewölbe collection began in the 17th century
The Grünes Gewölbe houses one of Europe’s largest and most valuable collections of jewels and other treasures from the royal courts.
The creation of the museum collection began in the 17th century by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and later King of Poland. One of the museum’s most famous art treasures is the Dresden Green Diamond, a 41-carat gem.
