Berlin. German police closed a pro-Palestinian protest camp that had invited Greta Thunberg, a voice highly critical of Israel, who accused authorities of silencing activists.
Police argued that the 21-year-old Swedish climate activist attended a pro-Palestinian rally in Berlin on Monday, the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which ended in clashes with police.
“Recent events related to Thunberg have led to the view that she was a willing participant in resorting to violence,” the police in the city of Dortmund, western Germany, justified.
“I was invited by the Palestinian Student Camp in Dortmund to participate in a round table. Shortly after they published a photo announcing this event, the police came to tell them that they had to leave and that they would arrest me if I went there,” Thunberg denounced in a video message on social network X.
The young woman, who wore a black and white keffia over her shoulders, accused Germany of “silenced and threatening activists who speak out against the genocide and occupation of Palestine.”
Germany, which is striving to atone for the Holocaust, often highlights its strong support for Israel and Jewish communities around the world.
The German government urged Israel to comply with international law in the Gaza conflict and called for a ceasefire in that territory and in Lebanon.
A spokesman for the conservative parliamentary group demanded that Thunberg, founder of the “Fridays For Future” protest movement, be banned from entering the country.
