German police have arrested two American soldiers in connection with a fatal stabbing last night. The victim, a 28-year-old man, was stabbed at a fair in Wittlich, a town on the Moesel just northeast of Trier.
The stabbing is believed to have happened after an argument. According to witnesses, four people fled. The two American soldiers (25 and 26) were quickly arrested. The other two suspects have not yet been found.
The two soldiers have been handed over to the US authorities. They will now investigate the case in Germany according to NATO regulations.
American military personnel have been present in Germany since the end of World War II. Today there are still about 34,000, for military support from NATO, among other things.
