German police have arrested a 30-year-old Tajik man. According to the police, he may be involved in a plot to attack the Cologne Cathedral.
Police say the man is being held “to avert danger”.
On Sunday, police searched an apartment in the city of Wesel, about 100 kilometers north of Cologne. Five men were arrested. Four of them have been released, the 30-year-old man from Tajikistan is still in custody.
This weekend, police increased security measures at Cologne’s iconic cathedral. The police had indications of a possible attack by an Islamic group. The Cathedral is closed to tourists for the time being, but religious services are still held there.
The Cathedral is an important attraction for Cologne. The cathedral normally attracts more than 100,000 visitors between Christmas and New Year.
