German police arrest suspect in Cologne terrorism threat

Dec 27, 2023 at 4:51 PM Update: an hour ago

The man who was arrested in Cologne on Sunday because of the terrorist threat is known to the police. The German security services are not disclosing his identity and will not confirm whether he was plotting an attack on the Cologne Cathedral.

The German police did report that he was possibly planning an attack on the cathedral. It is said to be a thirty-year-old Tajik.

He was arrested along with four others in Wesel, a city about 100 kilometers from Cologne. The four other detainees were released after a short time.

Despite the arrest, the Cologne Cathedral will also receive extra security this weekend. The police have indications that an Islamist group might want to attack the cathedral during the New Year period.

The Cathedral in Cologne, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually, will remain closed to tourists until further notice. Religious services can continue with security.
