German Plans to Accept Persecuted Russian LGBTQ+ Individuals

Several German states are planning to accept people from Russia who are persecuted there because of their sexual identity or orientation.

This was reported by “European Truth” with reference to Welt.

Members of sexual and gender minorities can already apply for asylum with a chance of success. Federal government admission programs could provide safer escape routes, such as paid airline tickets, according to the report. The issuance of visas could also be simplified.

Recently, the Russian Supreme Court classified the “international public LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization.” In the future, criminal authorities may also take action against people who support queer issues. There is a risk of several years in prison. Leaders of LGBT organizations could face up to ten years in prison, according to reports.

“We must act as quickly as possible, given the arrests that are already taking place,” said Bremen left-wing lawmaker Maja Tegeler. Berlin leftist Klaus Lederer said: “I expect the federal government will not leave those who show solidarity out in the cold, will increase its share of the costs, and will also financially support support structures within queer communities.”

The Federal Ministry of the Interior still must approve government programs. A template for the admission program is already being developed in Bremen.

There is no specific figure yet on how many people will be accepted.

Let us recall that in September it was reported that since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, about 3,500 Russian men of military age have asked for asylum in Germany – of which only about 90 people received refugee status.

Before this, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Alexey Makeev criticized the initiative announced by German politicians to provide asylum to Russian citizens who left their country in connection with the mobilization announced by the President of the Russian Federation.
