The suspect in the knife attack on a train in Germany yesterday appears seriously confused and there is no indication of an act of terror, authorities report. Initial investigation results indicate that the 27-year-old Syrian man injured random train passengers without provocation. He has been admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
At the stabbing incident in the high-speed train four people were injured. The investigative services are still in the dark as to the possible motive of the suspect. A search of the house of the man, who came to Germany from Syria as a refugee in 2014, found nothing suspicious.
An initial psychological evaluation indicates that the man may be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. German media already reported on Saturday that the perpetrator had called for help on the train. The suspect had lost his job the day before the incident, police said.
Two men still in hospital
The attack happened in the ICE between Regensburg and Nuremberg, in the southeast of the country. The suspect is said to have used a folding knife with an 8-centimeter blade. The victims are two men aged 60 and one aged 26 and 39.
The youngest was the first to be attacked and seriously injured in the head. The perpetrator then attacked the two sixties. One of them sustained injuries to his torso and head, the other is not clear. The attacker then ran to another car. There he stabbed the 39-year-old victim in the upper body. The two youngest victims are still in hospital, the 60-year-old men are no longer.
