DMR PM Tireless ambassador of musical education: The German Music Council remembers its honorary member Ernst-Ullrich Neumann
The music educator and cultural manager Ernst-Ullrich Neumann died on November 2, 2024 at the age of 75. Neumann not only made a significant contribution to the development and expansion of musical education in Brandenburg, but was also involved in music policy. He shaped the work of the German Music Council for many years in federal specialist committees and project advisory boards. In 2015 he was made an honorary member of the German Music Council for his music-political commitment.
On this Prof. Martin Maria KrügerPresident of the German Music Council: “The music landscape – especially in Brandenburg, but also beyond – owes a lot to Ernst-Ullrich Neumann! It is visionary, tireless ‘persuaders’ like Neumann who pave the way to bring people into contact with one another through culture and thus sustainably change and enrich society. 37 years as a music school teacher and director and over two decades as President of the Brandenburg State Music Council: Neumann’s work was shaped by music, through and through – and by the certainty that musical education is the key to better coexistence. He was also passionate about bringing together the music councils of the old and new federal states into the German Music Council. The German Music Council mourns the loss of its honorary member, in gratitude for Ernst-Ullrich Neumann’s great work.”
Ernst-Ullrich Neumann studied musicology in Halle and then dedicated his life to running a music school. He worked as a music school teacher and director for a total of 37 years, since 1986 at the Senftenberg Music School, which became the Oberspreewald-Lausitz District Music School according to his concept. In his role as President of the Brandenburg State Music Council, he played a decisive role in the development of the Brandenburg State Music Council from 1992 to 2013. During his term of office, the state youth choir, the state youth accordion orchestra, the state youth zupforchester and the state youth jazz orchestra were founded. Numerous memberships and jury chairs complemented his music-political commitment. Among other things, he was chairman of the jury for “Jugend musiziert” at the state and federal level and a partner in the Rheinsberg Music Academy.
