The remains of a German mountaineer who had been missing since 1986 have been found near Zermatt in Switzerland. Two weeks ago, mountaineers discovered the human remains on Theodul Glacier, along with a shoe and crampons.
DNA research now shows that it concerns the remains of a German who disappeared in September 1986. The 38-year-old man had not returned from an expedition at the time; a search turned up nothing.
The Theodul Glacier is located south of Zermatt, between the Matterhorn and the Dufourspitze. That is the highest mountain in Switzerland.
The Swiss police say that human remains and belongings have been found more often recently. These are exposed due to the warming of the Alpine region and the resulting melting ice.
