“This war is also a war against culture, against a culture of democracy,” said a German green politician.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, 375 cultural institutions in Ukraine have been destroyed and 137 churches have been damaged.
“It is becoming clear that this is an attack on Ukraine’s cultural identity,” Rota said.
She promised German support for Ukraine.
“We are now trying to send an international signal in support of the promotion of the Old Town of Odessa to the status of a World Heritage City,” in an interview with the program of the German public broadcaster ZDF morning magazine announced Rota.
The international community must take responsibility, which could also serve as an additional shield against attacks, the minister said.
Rota also spoke positively about granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for the European Union (EU), pointing out that in this case too we are talking about common values - freedom, justice and peace.
The Minister noted that Germany also supports the digitization of archive collections in Ukraine.
“Libraries and old archives, in other words, memories from cities, communities, societies, are also under threat here,” Rota said.
Rota is the first member of the German government to visit Odessa since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Odessa is considered not only a cultural metropolis, but also a strategically important point, especially due to the large port.
