“Ukrainians can certainly blame the West for promising, but not giving…Because it was not so fast and everything they wanted,” the German Marshal said in the TV24 program “Globuss”, discussing current events in international politics, including the military support of Western countries to Ukraine Kristīne Bērziņa, head of the foundation’s Northern direction and security policy researcher.
“On the other hand, what the Ukrainians demand, especially Zaluzhnya [Valērijs Zalužnijs, Ukrainas armijas virspavēlnieks – red.] there is a demand for all the points that would be necessary for further victory at the moment, then it is simply impossible – air superiority, new technologies that have not yet been invented and the like…What Ukraine is asking for is not realistic,” emphasized Berziņa.
The security policy researcher pointed out that Ukraine often installs such installations that “sound like space even in the richest Western countries”. The reality was that Ukraine had what it had and it already cost a lot.
“The dispute between the West and Ukraine, especially between Ukraine and Washington, is that Ukraine tried to hold absolutely everything along the front line, and wanted to push in and regain its territory in three stages. And from the US point of view, it was a mistake. From the very beginning, it was necessary to choose one direction and push to the south, try to cut off Russia’s approach to Crimea. Yes, it would have been difficult, but according to Western thinking and all strategies, it would have worked over time and better than the current situation,” explained Bērziņa, head of the German Marshall Fund’s Northern approach and security policy researcher, in the TV24 program “Globuss”.
In addition, Bērziņa emphasized that now the weapons that were used throughout the year are no longer there. “And what to do next? Republican [ASV] half still have questions about how much would be needed to recover the territory? And now the war is no longer about regaining territory within the next year, but rather about how to weaken Russia’s forces. Therefore, again – what is in the interests of the West, what is in the interests of the Baltics, what is in the interests of the USA? This is so that Russia’s appetite does not increase, that its sense of omnipotence in the Kremlin is limited, and when in fact there is no ability to do something bad somewhere for many years to come,” commented Berziņa.
Now it is no longer a question of the fact that by continuing the military aid deliveries now, Ukraine would regain everything that it lost a year, a year and a half ago, but of what Ukraine is doing now. “Ukraine protects both Ukraine and the rest of us. That’s the argument in Washington, too, but it hasn’t fully gone through yet, as of this week [raidījums ēterā bija 07.12.2023.; red.] there is great disappointment and fatigue as to why a decision on support for Ukraine could not be made easily, quickly, when it is clear that big Russia is doing something terrible, little Ukraine needs help and it is in our interests… Now it is argued that NATO cannot in every to invest 2% of GDP in the country. If Ukraine lost and Russia won, then it would be a matter of investing 4 or 5%,” Berziņa commented on the situation regarding the war in Ukraine and military aid to it from Western countries in the TV24 program.
