German Man Faces 15-Year Prison Sentence for Abusing and Killing 20-Month-Old Boy in Switzerland

The public prosecutor wants to send the German to prison for 15 years. After serving his sentence, he will have to leave Switzerland for 15 years, according to the indictment.

The nine-page indictment describes the horror of spring 2021 in the usual factual terms. The incidents always occurred when the mother of the 20-month-old boy was out of the house and the accused was supposed to look after the toddler.

Tormented for weeks

The first documented act of violence took place on May 1, 2021. The man is said to have hit the child in the face with an unknown object – without causing any serious damage. Because the probability was there, the prosecution classified the incident as attempted grievous bodily harm.

After several other attacks of varying severity, the abuse occurred between May 30 and June 3, 2021, which cost the child his life almost two weeks later.

The accused is said to have grabbed the boy, who was already scarred and weakened by the earlier attacks, by the upper body and violently shook him back and forth several times. The injuries the child sustained resulted in his death. He died on June 12, 2021 as a result of a traumatic brain injury.

The child had become a nuisance to him

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the motive for the crime was almost succinct: the child had become a nuisance to the accused because it often slept in bed with its mother – i.e. his girlfriend – and he always had to look after it.

The indictment does not provide any information about the role of the mother. It remains unclear whether she became suspicious or tried to help the child. According to the prosecution, the boy was suddenly unable to walk due to an injury and was only crawling. Apart from that, the injuries are said to have been barely visible from the outside.

In addition to the acts of violence against the child, the man is also accused of drug offenses. He is said to have consumed around one to two grams of cannabis daily with his partner. They are also said to have sold a few hundred grams of it together.
