German legend harshly criticizes Mexican footballer

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 22 (EL UNIVERSAL).- Jurgen Klinsmann, a German soccer legend and former coach of the United States national team, said that the problem with Mexican soccer is that its players “feel very comfortable playing in their country.”

Klinsmann, champion of the 1990 World Cup in Italy, said that in order to improve, the Mexican player must seek his fortune in Europe.

“In Mexico, perhaps, the players are very comfortable because they win well, in full stadiums, it is an exciting league,” he said in statements reported by ESPN.

For the former striker of teams such as Inter Milan, Mexico “has beautiful places to play and live, Guadalajara, Monterrey, the stadiums around Mexico City, are excellent places, perhaps that is why footballers do not want to go further, try it in Europe.”

The key, Klinsmann continued, “for a team to succeed internationally is that the players always play at the highest level. If you have players in Europe, it is likely that they can compete in the Champions League, which will put them up against the best in the world. This will be constant and so you don’t have to wait for a World Cup or a Copa America to come along.”

The German asks Mexican players to take risks, “and if it doesn’t work out, then there’s no question about it. I encouraged this when I was in the United States and now almost all of them play in Europe.”
