German lawyer Selmayr new EU ambassador to the Vatican

Martin Selmayr (53), previously representative of the European Commission in Austria, has taken up his post as EU Ambassador to the Holy See. He will also represent the European Union to the Sovereign Order of Malta, the Republic of San Marino and the UN organizations based in Rome. These include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Program, as the German lawyer wrote in the short message service X.

“I look forward to working closely with #TeamEurope and the diplomatic community in Rome to strengthen the rules-based international order, global food security and sustainable development based on the principles of the UN Charter,” said Selmayr. He thanked EU High Representative Josep Borrell and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the challenging task entrusted to him.

Selmayr succeeds Dutch diplomat Alexandra Valkenburg (54), who had been in office since 2020. Before his time in Vienna, his roles included Chief of Cabinet to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Secretary General of the EU Commission. (KNA)
