German kicker Dominik Eberle has signed with the Green Bay Packers. This was announced by the Wisconsin team on Tuesday.
“It’s incredible that I can now be part of such a traditional team,” said Eberle Sport1. “I’m looking forward to becoming a cheesehead and living in Green Bay. I’m looking forward to the first game, to the preseason, to the training camp. I’ll give everything and then we’ll see what comes out of it.”
However, Eberle’s chances of actually making the leap into the 53-player squad at the start of the 2022 season are not very good. His main competitor is Mason Crosby, who has been one of the best kickers in the NFL since 2007 and is almost a fixture in Green Bay.
It is not uncommon to sign substitutes for the off-season camps and training camp, as the roster is limited to a maximum of 90 players leading up to pre-season.
Eberle was an undrafted rookie from Utah State who spent his entire 2020 freshman season on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. In 2021 he ended up on the practice squad with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans and even came on for Houston as a corona replacement in week 16 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
