“We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure that order is followed,” Wegner said.
Referring to the parts of the city that have recently seen riots, Wegner said that maintaining order in some areas is a difficult task. “I can only appeal to everyone: Allow us to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a peaceful and relaxed way,” he said.
But he warned that anyone who attacks the police or emergency services will face consequences.
In some parts of the capital, police forces will be deployed in an increased mode.
“We are aware that since October 7, the security situation in our city has become more tense than before,” Wegner said. The city has learned from last year that it is necessary to deploy a sufficient number of police officers.
German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser this week expressed concern that the riots that took place last year on New Year’s Eve in several German cities could be repeated.
She said days like New Year’s Eve saw an increase in violence “and we obviously have to pay very close attention to the danger that it can combine with the radicalization that we’re seeing now in the Middle East aspect of the conflict.”
On New Year’s Eve 2022, several German cities were attacked with pyrotechnics and rockets against policemen and firefighters. These attacks were particularly severe in some areas of Berlin, and 41 police officers were injured.
