The detainee, named in the prosecutor’s statement as Jiang G., is suspected of spying on representatives of the Chinese opposition in Germany and of passing information about the EP to the Chinese intelligence service.
He was arrested on Monday in Dresden.
The detainee is a supporter of MEP Maksimilians Krā. Kraa is AfD’s main candidate in the upcoming EP elections in June.
German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser confirmed the spying allegations were “very serious”.
“If it is proven that espionage has taken place in the EP for the benefit of the Chinese intelligence services, this is an attack on European democracy from within,” Fezer’s statement said.
“Anyone who hires such a worker must also take responsibility,” said the minister. “This matter must be thoroughly investigated, (..) all connections and backgrounds must be clarified,” said Fezer.
This is not the first time that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been involved in a spying scandal. At the beginning of the year, it was announced that the deputy assistant of the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” was suspected of having connections with Russian intelligence.
According to the facts published in the investigation of the magazine “Der Spiegel” and the web media “The Insider”, an assistant member of the Bundestag of the German far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD ) Eigen Schmidt to be linked to Russian intelligence services. Vladimir Sergiyenko, an assistant to Schmidt, who was born in Kazakhstan, maintained contact with an officer of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), according to the investigation.
Also in the European Parliament, the extreme right-wing identity and democracy group is considered the most anti-Russian and anti-Ukrainian political force, which has nine members of the German far-right party “Alternative für Deutschland” (“Alternative for Germany”, “AfD”) active.
The party believes that Europe must renew cooperation with Russia to ensure peace and prosperity. And the deputy assistant of this political force in the German parliament has contacted the Russian security services about receiving financial support for the party’s lawsuit against the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
