The German intelligence service Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) suspects that someone from its own ranks may have been spying for Russia.
The German prosecutor’s office reported on Thursday afternoon, according to Reuters.
The suspected spy, who is himself a BND employee, was arrested on Wednesday after the German secret services raided the person’s home and office.
The BND is also said to have investigated another person in connection with the case.
– In 2022, he shared information he had access to through his work with a Russian intelligence organization.
– The person is suspected of treason, he says further.
It is not known what kind of information the suspected spy would have passed on to Russia, but the German authorities refer to it as “state secrets”.
The German newspaper The mirror he refers to the arrest as one of the largest espionage cases in the intelligence agency’s history.
