German Industry Experiences Unexpected Rebound in December Thanks to Aircraft Orders

German industry experienced an unexpected rebound in December. Thanks to a number of large orders in aircraft construction, the industry revived briefly in an otherwise disappointing year.

The number of orders increased by 8.9 percent in December compared to November. That is the largest increase in a month in more than three years.

The growth is due to an exceptional number of aircraft orders. In the vehicle construction category, the number of orders increased by 110.9 percent in one month. The metal industry and the manufacturing industry of electronic components also noticed this.

The lack of activity in Germany last year weighs heavily on the German economy. The short-lived upturn in aircraft orders will not change much, experts warn.

Without the one-off large orders, the industry would even have declined somewhat. This was partly due to the decrease in the number of orders in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering and the chemical industry. Throughout 2023, the number of industrial orders decreased by 5.9 percent compared to a year earlier.
