German ice hockey team wins first group game at World Championships in Canada

The German ice hockey players made a successful start to the World Championships in Canada. Despite being quickly behind after only ten seconds, the squad of national coach Thomas Schädler won their first group game 6:2 (1:1, 3:1, 2:0) against Sweden in Brampton on Thursday.

Franziska Feldmeier (19th minute) equalized before the break in the first third. In the middle third, Laura Kluge (25th), Celina Haider (26th) and Svenja Voigt (34th) ensured the 4:2 lead. Again Haider (48th) and Feldmeier (56th) scored the final score.

“Of course I’m very proud of the whole team and the whole staff after this great win against the Swedes,” said national coach Schädler: “We had prepared a plan in advance of how we wanted to structure the game, and it worked very well. It was also important for us as a team not to let ourselves be discouraged after the first quick goal we conceded.”

On Friday (9 p.m. / MagentaSport) the German team will continue against Finland. The other group opponents are France and Hungary. The aim of the German selection is to leave two teams behind in order to safely avoid relegation. Third place in the group of five nations would also mean entry into the quarter-finals. (dpa)
