To become more climate-friendly: German hospitals need more money

Berlin.According to a report, German hospitals need more money to become more climate-friendly. “If all individually possible measures were to be implemented, investments in the mid double-digit billion range would be necessary,” said Gerald Gass, CEO of the German Hospital Association (DKG) on Tuesday in Berlin. The DKG commissioned the study from the German Hospital Institute. According to the information, this is the first comprehensive survey of climate and energy-related data from German clinics.

According to this, 63 percent of the hospitals surveyed have potential for improvement in the energy supply. Almost a quarter of the houses use photovoltaic systems, only around one percent operate their own combined heat and power plants with biogas. 21 percent of the clinics used collection systems for anesthetic gases that are used during operations. Many of these gases are particularly harmful to the climate.

According to the report, geothermal probes, optimization of the running time of ventilation or timers offer the greatest opportunities to save energy. The DKG again warned of gas supply bottlenecks. 92 percent of the clinics used natural gas for heat supply.
