German Hockey League (DEL) Mandates Mandatory Neck Protectors Following Tragic Death of Adam Johnson

The German Hockey League (DEL) reacts to the tragic death of Adam Johnson and introduces a new rule: neck protectors will be mandatory for players.

news-item-description">A huge tragedy took place in Saturday’s hockey game, when Adam Johnson was hit in the neck by a skate in front of 8,000 fans, and doctors failed to save him.

At the end of October, a tragic accident occurred in the British hockey league: Adam Johnson (†29) was hit by a skate blade in the neck and died of bleeding. The issue of neck protection has been much debated ever since.

While the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has not yet decided on the introduction of mandatory carotid protection, in Germany they are one step further and on Monday, 14 sports directors of clubs from the DEL, in coordination with the players’ association, unanimously decided on the mandatory wearing of neck protectors.

The Regulation should enter into force on January 1, 2024 at the earliest.

Voices are coming from the German Ice Hockey Association that no one would object if this innovation was introduced in the national team immediately. During this week, the country is organizing the German Cup, in which, in addition to the domestic selection, Slovakia, Denmark and Austria will also participate.
