More mourning message in German handball

Sad day for German handball: In addition to coaching legend Rolf Brack the long-standing Bundesliga President Reiner Witte also passed away.

Like the German Handball Federation (DHB) – where Witte used to be Vice President Law – Witte died on Friday after a long, serious illness, two days after his 68th birthday. He spent his last hours with his family in his hometown of Langwedel in Lower Saxony.

Reiner Witte was also the national handball goalkeeper

“Reiner Witte was one of the creators of German handball in various functions with inspiring passion and impressive specialist knowledge. With his work he left his mark on his state and regional association, in the DHB and above all in the Handball Bundesliga,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann: “This news makes us very sad. Above all, our sympathy goes to his wife and children.”

Witte was active as a goalkeeper for TV Grambke-Bremen in the Bundesliga and also played five international matches. The lawyer earned his living as a lawyer and entrepreneur, and he contributed his knowledge from 2002 to 2008 as DHB Vice President Law.

From 2008 to 2014, as league president, Witte was responsible for the fortunes of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga men, he was the honorary man in the background, while Frank Bohmann, who is still in office today, steered day-to-day events as managing director. Through the seat on the DHB executive committee, which his office brought with it, Witte was also the link between the league and the association.

Eventually he resigned for reasons of age the former THW Kiel manager Uwe Schwenker was the successor. Schwenker’s father, Hinrich, who died in 2005, was Witte’s coach when he was active.
