The death toll from devastating floods in parts of west Germany and Belgium rose above 90 today, as the search continues for hundreds of people who remain unaccounted for.
“About 1,300 people are missing in the Ahrweiler district south of Cologne,” the district government said on Facebook. The Sun, Friday (16/7/2021).
Authorities in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate state said 50 people had died there, including at least nine residents of a nursing home for the disabled.
In neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia, state officials put the death toll at 30, but warned that the figure could rise further.
Meanwhile, Belgian media RTBF reported at least 12 people had died in the country.
Floods also hit Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, while parts of Switzerland, France and the Czech Republic were also on high alert.
“When you haven’t heard from people in a long time…you have to fear the worst,” said regional Home Secretary Roger Lewentz.
“The number of victims is likely to continue to rise in the coming days,” he added.
