“It seems hard to say goodbye, but I am at peace with myself. There is life ‘after,’ and I want to be able to play sports with my kids and raise them actively,” Dressen said. “What could be more dignified than ending your career in Kitzbühel? I want to enjoy that again,” said the downhill rider who triumphed on the Hahnenkamm on January 20, 2018.
So far, Dressen has driven 79 races in the World Cup and celebrated five wins, adding a podium finish in five more starts. He last stood on the podium in February 2020 at the super-G in Saalbach. His career was marred by a heavy fall in November 2018 at Beaver Creek, which, among other things, tore ligaments in his right knee. Health problems also kept him down in the following years, since March 2020 he practically did not compete for a year and a half.
He entered the current season with optimism, but in the end he had to admit that a return to the elite was no longer possible. “You want to give everything and I really tried everything. It’s bitter when the body just doesn’t cooperate anymore,” he added through tears.
