Although we haven’t yet reached the much-hyped self-driving taxis, the next technologies that promise flying taxis are already ahead. Such aircraft have been talked about for many years, but finally there are some activities that bring them closer to reality.
For example, the German urban air mobility (Urban Air Mobility, or UAM) company Volocopter informs that it has received all the necessary permits to begin mass production of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in the country. This industry is highly regulated, so this is a big achievement for this company.
The VoloCity aircraft developed by Volocopter visually looks like a helicopter with several electrically powered propellers placed on top. This allows the aircraft to take off and land vertically, which is especially important given the eVTOL’s intended primary application of transporting people in populated areas. Already, the aircraft created by Volocopter are allowed to fly over populated areas in certain parts of the world, and it is very likely that these aircraft will already be used at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.
