German Companies Pay Tax-Free Inflation Compensation to Employees: Ifo Institute Study

According to the Munich Ifo Institute, 72 percent of German companies have already paid their employees tax- and duty-free inflation compensation. A further 16 percent of companies plan to pay out this bonus soon, while only twelve percent do not want to pay a bonus.

The majority of companies pay inflation compensation

According to a current study by the Ifo Institute, most companies in Germany have already paid out tax- and duty-free inflation compensation to their employees: “The reason for paying this bonus is primarily to increase the motivation of your employees”explained Ifo expert Daria Schaller. In 27 percent, this payment was made as part of a collective agreement.

Company size influences willingness to pay bonuses

The willingness to pay the inflation compensation bonus increases with increasing company size: 93 percent of large companies with over 500 employees and 84 percent of smaller companies stated that they had already paid out this bonus or had planned to pay it out.

Industrial companies lead when paying premiums

Industrial companies in particular are ahead with 93 percent (already paid or planned), followed by trading companies with 86 percent and service companies with 85 percent.

Motivation and competitiveness as the main reasons

A majority of the companies surveyed (71 percent) see the bonus as an additional opportunity to motivate employees. A good half (56 percent) take advantage of the tax advantage, and 49 percent cite their competitiveness on the job market as the reason. “Small companies primarily focus on the motivation of their workforce, while large companies pay more often when a collective agreement is concluded.”so Schaller.

Framework conditions for inflation compensation premium

The inflation compensation bonus, a voluntary benefit from employers, has allowed companies to grant their employees an amount of up to 3,000 euros tax-free and duty-free since October 26, 2022. This was legislated by the federal government as part of the third “relief package” in response to rising energy prices. The possibility of paying out this bonus is valid until the end of 2024.
