The German specialist Ārons Cīrke, who has been approved as the head coach of the Latvian men’s national team, will not take up the position, which will not change the goals of the national team, Arvis Juzups, the national team director of the Latvian Handball Federation (LHF), told Latvijas Radio on Wednesday.
The time of Covid-19 so far introduced new conditions and a lot of uncertainty, so the federation decided not to cooperate, Juzups explained. He emphasized that the team would not be left without a coach, but no one could assess how much the changes would affect the results of the team.

“I don’t think there has been any tragedy, the goal for the Latvian national team will still be to qualify for the European Championship in 2022,” Juzups added.
Agreement with Circus was concluded for the 2021 World Cup qualifiers with the possibility of an extension. But because of Covid-19 There were no qualifying games in Europe and travel tickets to the world championship were divided according to places in the ranking, which did not leave any chance for Latvia.
In his coaching career, Cīrke mostly worked in the second German Bundesliga teams, but as an athlete he played 24 games for the German national team, where in 1998 he won a silver medal in the European Championship. LHF after the expiry of the current contract decided not to continue cooperation with the head coach of the national team Armands Uščinas, but was looking for a foreign specialist who could contribute to the development of all Latvian handball.
In the qualifying group of the 2022 European Championship, Latvia must play against Norway, Belarus and Italy, with the first games taking place in early November.
