German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday that any future security guarantees for Ukraine provided by the West must be different from the status of European members of the North Atlantic Alliance.
As reported by “European truth” with reference to ReutersScholz said this at a press conference following the summit of the European Political Community in Moldova.
“Given the current situation, there is no question of acquiring membership (of Ukraine in NATO – ed.) … We should all focus on how we, as citizens, can support Ukraine,” Scholz said.
Asked about possible security guarantees for Ukraine, Scholz added:
“They must be designed in such a way as to provide Ukraine with the necessary security against the threat of attack, so that they simultaneously stabilize Ukraine … and of course, it is always part of the security guarantee that it is taken seriously.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to reporters, backed “stronger, concrete, very clear security guarantees” for Ukraine, adding that he would hold talks on the issue with Scholz in Potsdam on June 7.
“We must give Ukraine a long-term perspective. It is imperative that the Vilnius summit gives these immediate guarantees,” Macron is quoted as saying. Reuters.
At a summit in Moldova, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called security guarantees for Ukraine and neighboring countries “very important.” He not only referred to the Russian attack on Ukraine, but also warned of “possible attacks on other parts of Europe.”
It should be noted that earlier on Thursday, the German chancellor promised Ukraine security guarantees at the end of the war.
