German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s accusations of fascism against Israel “absurd.” The head of the German government made this assessment today, November 14, three days before he is to receive the Turkish leader for negotiations in Berlin, France-Presse (AFP) reports.
Israel “is a democracy” and “a country that adheres to human rights and international law, it “acts accordingly.”
“The accusations against Israel are therefore absurd,” the chancellor said at a press conference.
Scholz was commenting on Erdogan’s statements last Friday that Israel’s legitimacy “has become questionable due to its own fascism.” Erdogan previously called Palestinian Hamas a “liberation group” and Israel a “war criminal.”
The Turkish leader’s visit to Berlin is expected on November 17.
