Not all professional footballers found new clubs in the transfer summer. Some German celebrities are still looking, including many former national players.
Timo Horn (30) – Tor
Homegrown at 1. FC Köln, a regular there for many years, guarded the DFB goal from the U15 to the U21, won Olympic silver in 2016. At FC he lost his regular place to Marvin Schwäbe, and after a good season and a half on the bench he is now looking a new challenge.
Karim Bellarabi (33) – right winger
A fixture at Bayer Leverkusen for many years, scoring 34 goals in 215 games and making eleven international appearances. Bellarabi no longer wants to play in Germany, but he is considering playing outside Europe – which is fashionable at the moment.
André Hahn (33) – right winger
Hahn was also allowed to play for Germany once and earned his place with strong performances at FC Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He was recently slowed down at FCA with cartilage damage, and the injury is now likely to be a hindrance when looking for a club.
Marvin Plattenhardt (31) – Left defender
Once considered a beacon of hope on the DFB’s left defense, he was in the starting line-up in the 2018 World Cup opening game against Mexico (0-1). Most recently captain at Hertha BSC, but without a new contract after relegation to the 2nd league. It’s surprising that the standard specialist doesn’t have a new club yet.
Nico Schulz (30) – Left defender
Schulz was also once considered a solution for Germany’s left defense, after all he was worth a whopping 25.5 million euros for Borussia Dortmund to Hoffenheim in 2019. But he couldn’t meet the expectations of the club and national team, and Dortmund let him go a year before the end of his contract.
Leaving Borussia Dortmund: Nico Schulz.
Amin Younes (30) – left winger
A rollercoaster career: just three years ago at Eintracht Frankfurt he was so strong that he made it into the national team. But he left, once again, in a dispute, signed in Saudi Arabia, was once again involved in a scandal with his loan club FC Utrecht – and now, despite being at his best as a footballer and having great technical skills, he doesn’t seem to be able to find a taker. Keeps fit in Mönchengladbach.
Sebastian Rudy (33) – Defensive midfield
He once played for FC Bayern and was worth 16 million euros for FC Schalke and was also in great demand in the national team (29 games). His contract at Schalke was long-term and lucrative, but there were no successes. Rudy played for Hoffenheim on loan for several years and was recently just a follower there.
Jérôme Boateng (35) – Center back
Arguably the best player from the 2014 World Cup final is also still available. Most recently he was under contract with Olympique Lyon, but was hardly ever on the pitch. Despite his 35 years, Boateng doesn’t want to stop.
Jérôme Boateng is still under contract with Olympique Lyon.
Shkodran Mustafi (31) – central defender
Another world champion from 2014 without a club: Mustafi was a surprise nomination from Löw at the time and then made a career at Arsenal FC. He was disappointing at Schalke 04, and most recently he was injured for a long time in the Spanish second division at UD Levante and was then no longer in demand. He could still have a few more years as a professional ahead of him and is being discussed at his former club Sampdoria Genoa.
Lukas Klünter (27) – Right defender
Went to Berlin as a young, fast professional and U-national player from 1. FC Cologne, won a regular place at Hertha BSC and lost it again. Recently relegated to the 3rd league as a permanent fixture from Arminia Bielefeld and has so far been waiting in vain for the right request.
Edgar Prib (33) – Central midfielder
He was so strong at Greuther Fürth in 2013 that Hannover 96 signed him for three million euros. 102 Bundesliga games, 170 second division appearances, but most recently at Fortuna Düsseldorf and in the second Turkish league at Manisa FK, he was unconvincing.
Moritz Leitner (30) – Central midfield
Was captain of the U21 national team, eternal talent in Dortmund, Stuttgart, Augsburg and at Lazio. The career stalled, but blossomed briefly at Norwich City in 2019 with promotion to the Premier League. Without a contract since the summer of 2022 despite being at his prime as a footballer.
Some non-German former Bundesliga professionals are also still looking for a club, for example the former Mainz team Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Jean-Paul Boetius (most recently Hertha BSC) or the long-time Wolfsburg player Joshua Guilavogui. Add to that Konstantinos Stafylidis (most recently VfL Bochum) and Ermin Bicakcic (most recently Hoffenheim).
