President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas writes the following on her official Instagram account @bundestagspraesidentin:
Four Presidents of the Bundestag, that’s a total of over 30 years of service in this House. A good 30 years in which my predecessors were fully committed to democracy and accompanied our parliament through one or two groundbreaking phases.
I was very pleased to be able to welcome Rita Süssmuth, Wolfgang Thierse and Norbert Lammert to the German Bundestag. Unfortunately, it is a rarity that the four of us meet together. It is all the nicer when we have the opportunity to exchange ideas.
Together we were able to look at the newly designed gallery with portraits of all previous Presidents of the Bundestag. The 13 paintings now hang in the Reichstag building. I see them here every day on the way to my office – a permanent reminder of the long tradition of this office and the 75-year history of our parliament.
