German Bundestag – BpB withdrawn video publication

Berlin: (hib/STO) The Federal Government’s response (20/12512) to a minor inquiry by the AfD parliamentary group (20/12386). The BpB then withdrew the publication based on critical assessments of the content of the video.

According to the information, the video “took up the controversial thesis of political scientist Clemens Heni,[o]Without 2006, Pegida would not have come about on this scale, and without Pegida there would be no AfD in this form.’ (Frankfurter Rundschau, September 4, 2019).” Taking up this thesis in the context of the “EURO 2024, which was characterized by great joy, hospitality, diversity, solidarity and sportsmanship,” was a mistake, the federal government writes.

As she also explains, the video was intended to encourage reflection on the importance of nationalism and patriotism in football. However, the format was not suitable for supporting a differentiated and critical discussion of the content. In addition, the required range of scientific discourse could not be represented. The accompanying community management of the BpB was also not sufficient to represent the content in the required controversial manner. “The one-sided presentation of the controversial scientific thesis and the lack of critical discussion and controversy in dealing with the content therefore did not meet the quality standards of the BpB, both in terms of content and implementation of the video,” the response continues.
