Clubs from the Bundesliga have paid tribute to the deceased “Sportschau” pioneer Ernst Huberty. One mourns one of the greats in German sports journalist history, wrote the German record champion FC Bayern Munich on its website.
«With his reports he wrote German sports history, inspired people for decades and became a role model for subsequent generations of journalists. Ernst Huberty brought football into our living rooms in his very specific, sovereign way,” explained club president Herbert Hainer.
Eintracht Frankfurt wrote on Twitter that “one of the greats of German sports journalism has left us”. Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund said they mourned Huberty. “Rest in peace, “Mr. Sportschau”!”, wished the association. FC Schalke 04 also recognized him as one of the “greats in German sports journalism” and expressed his condolences to family and friends.
Ernst Huberty died on Monday at the age of 96. On June 4, 1961, he moderated the first “sports show” on ARD and was its face for 21 years until 1982. He also remained in the memory of many television viewers through his comments on the so-called game of the century Germany against Italy at the 1970 World Cup semifinals in Mexico or the legendary water fight in Frankfurt at the 1974 World Cup between Germany and Poland.
