The German arms manufacturer “Rheinmetall” announced on Friday that it will form a joint venture with the Ukrainian state arms production company to ensure the maintenance of military equipment in Ukraine and eventually produce individual equipment there. Western allies have supplied Ukraine with large quantities of weapons, including armored personnel carriers and tanks, to help Kyiv fight against Russia, which has invaded the country.

The first stage of the agreement between Germany’s “Rheinmetall” and Ukraine’s “UkrOboronProm” provides for technical maintenance and repair of the armament supplied to Ukraine. In time, it is planned to produce some “Rheinmetall” equipment in Ukraine, the German company said. “Rheinmetall” did not provide further details, but the newspaper “Handelsblatt” reports that preparations are underway to produce tanks in Ukraine. The companies have signed an initial agreement and the joint venture, which has yet to be formally approved, will begin work in mid-July.
