Rheinmetall and Elbit Systems announced the successful fire test of the L52 wheeled artillery mount. The tests took place in March of this year at the Shivta test site in Israel. The tests were attended by high-ranking guests from the armed forces of Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Hungary.
What is known
German and Israeli companies have signed an agreement to jointly develop, manufacture and sell a self-propelled artillery mount in 2022. Britain and Hungary are already showing interest in the new weapon.
The howitzer is equipped with a 155 mm L52 cannon. The chassis is a highly mobile tactical truck RMMV HX (pictured above) with a 10×10 wheel arrangement. It was developed by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles. The vehicle has a well-protected cockpit and electronics for the fire control unit.
The German manufacturer is already working to ensure the integration of new guns in the future. In particular, the artillery mount will be equipped with the L52 gun upgraded to the A1 level, after which it will receive the L60 gun.
The L60 is currently under development. The maximum firing range will be 83 km. This corresponds to the program of the German armed forces, which is called Zukünftiges System Indirektes Feuer Mittlerer Reichweite. The project is aimed at increasing the firing range of German artillery.
