German Ambassador Martin Jäger proposes revision of spelling for Ukrainian capital Kyiv in German

German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jäger proposes to revise the spelling of the name of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in German. This was reported by the telegram channel “DW* main”.

Yeger supported the ARD correspondent Vasily Golodwho stated that Kiew is a transliteration of the Russian, and not the Ukrainian, name of Kyiv.

“As the German ambassador in Kyiv, I believe that we must consider his arguments and draw the right conclusions,” Jäger wrote, noting that the discussion initiated by the journalist was long overdue.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Alexey Makeev thanked his German colleague.

ARD correspondent Vasily Golod believes that in German the capital of Square should be written Kyiv or Kyjiw.

“The correct spelling in German is Kyiv or Kyjiw,” he said on his social network account, noting that the head of the German Foreign Ministry Annalena Burbok uses a transliteration of the Ukrainian name, but the ministry itself is the Russian version.

According to Golod, this is a matter of habit. Now, he says, the German media “correctly write” Belarus, not Weißrussland, and Kyiv instead of Kiew—not such a significant change. “For German society this is a formality, for Ukrainians it is a sign of recognition,” Golod emphasized.

In 2018, Ukraine launched the #KyivNotKiev campaign, since then almost all English-language media have changed their spelling, TK notes.
