As German ambassador in Moscow, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff doesn’t mince his words. At a celebration with more than 1,000 guests, he also remembered the Russian war against Ukraine.
On the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German ambassador in Moscow, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, praised Russia’s role in German reunification and called on the country to end the war against Ukraine. “The key to peace once again lies here in Moscow. Russia must end the war in Ukraine,” Lambsdorff said that evening in front of more than 1,000 Russian and foreign guests at a ceremony in the Russian capital.
“This is necessary in the interest of humanity, in the interest of peace in Europe, in the interest of the entire community of states.” This is also in Russia’s interest because so many people in the country long for peace, he said.
The diplomat recalled that the Soviet Union, whose legal successor is Russia, had made German reunification possible. The Soviet Union and the West were able to “bury a dangerous conflict” and lay the foundations for a better future. “At that time, a peace order emerged in Europe that was the envy of other regions of the world,” said Lambsdorff. “If we want to get back to this order, we have to get back to it,” he said, referring to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
As a representative of the federal government, whose senior representatives have themselves broken off contacts with the Kremlin in Moscow, Lambsdorff repeatedly publicly criticizes the war against Ukraine, to the annoyance of Russian authorities. When celebrating Unity Day or commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German embassy also reminds people that an end to the Cold War would not have been possible without Moscow.
