Berlin –
The staff at as many as eight airports in the region German take action labor strike en masse to demand better wages. As a result, tens of thousands of travelers are in danger of facing delays and flight cancellation throughout Friday (17/2) local time.
As reported AFPFriday (17/2/2023), a full-day strike, organized by the Verdi union, forced Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, to cancel more than 1,300 flights at the two busiest airports, Frankfurt and Munich.
“The strike action is expected to have a strong impact, especially on domestic air traffic, ranging from delays to cancellations and even partial closure of air traffic,” Verdi said in a statement.
The German airports association ADV called the strike “absolutely unacceptable”. It also stated that the stunt would impact around 295,000 passengers and more than 2,300 loggings simultaneously.
“Solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not at the expense of passengers,” ADV head Ralph Beisel said in a statement.
The other airports affected were in the cities of Bremen, Dortmund, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig and Stuttgart.
Verdi is leading negotiations for public sector workers, airport ground crew and aviation security staff, to demand better wages as workers watch their incomes eroded by the high cost of living.
