German airline Condor offers flights to Europe from $265

cOndoor-Fluggesellschaften She made waves this spring when she unveiled her new candy-striped planes. But perhaps the prices of the flights are more impressive than the looks of the planes. Last week, the German low-cost airline launched non-stop flights from Boston to Frankfurt with fares as low as US$265 each way, offering travelers between the East Coast and Germany affordable fares. Boston Tours is part of a much larger expansion of American service than Condor, just in time for the summer travel season.

The new service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Frankfurt Airport (FRA), which launched on May 23, now operates three times a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – on the A330-200.

The Boston launch coincided with the first Condor flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Frankfurt. From May 24th, Condor will offer three weekly flights (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday) with Boeing 767-300 between Los Angeles and Frankfurt. On May 19, Condor also launched service between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Frankfurt with flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, also using Boeing 767-300 aircraft. The Condor International Service offers seats in Economy, Premium and Business Class. West Coast one-way tickets start at $319.

With Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Condor now flies directly to 16 North American gates (12 in the USA and 4 in Canada):

  • Anchorage, Alaska
  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Boston
  • Fairbanks, Alaska
  • Halifax, Canada
  • Las Vegas
  • The Angels
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • New York City
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Portland, Oregon
  • San Francisco
  • Seattle
  • Toronto Kanada
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Whitehorse, Kanada

From its hub in Frankfurt, Condor connects more than 100 destinations in Europe and beyond.

Condor is the latest transatlantic low-cost airline to either launch, restart or expand long-haul routes between the US and Europe in recent months, just as international travel is enjoying a massive revival – sadly combined with airfares that are shocking travelers the cruelty. Other examples of airlines offering cheaper alternatives are Icelandic airline No-Frills, French Bee (which has cheap flights to Paris from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Newark) and Spanish airline ebenthe Scandinavian exuberance Norse AtlanticAirways.

“We are seeing an increase in pent-up demand from Americans who are now eager to visit Europe,” said Matthias Fries, Condor’s vice president and director of the North America region, in a statement.

Friss noted that Condor’s focus in the past has been on underserved US secondary markets – the new service for major airports such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston is a first for Condor.

In addition to its affordable economy seats, Condor offers competitive business and premium fares — the airline claims its premium seats are up to 50 percent cheaper than comparable seats on older airlines.

As for the candy-striped planes, transatlantic travelers won’t be able to fly them unless they have connections in Europe and beyond. The six Condors, which will fly the new design this summer and aim to boost the holiday mentality (think candy-striped umbrellas or beach towels), will mainly fly to Greece, Egypt, Mallorca and the Canary Islands in Spain.
